On Monday the elementary faculty had a professional development workshop about 6 Traits Writing and the trait of Sentence Fluency in particular.
There are four areas of focus when talking about Sentence Fluency:
1. Varying Sentence Beginnings
2. Varying Sentence Length
3. Varying Transitions and Conjunctions
4. Sentence Rhythm
Ask your child about what they are working on with Sentence Fluency in their school writing. Write some fun pieces at home practicing this trait. A interactive story (where a group writes a story with each person writing a sentence and then passing the story on to the next person) is a family activity that can reinforce what we are working on at school.
Sentence Fluency is also easily practiced when reading orally. Have some fun, read books aloud noting and practicing the rhythm and flow of the language. Here are some great books to read with your family that are solid examples of this trait.
