I just came across a new strategy (new to me) for help- ing students answer questions accurately.
It is called "Steal and Slide" (thanks to teach123-school.blogspot.sg).
The basic idea is that we teach children to steal words from the question and slide those keywords into the answer. This can be done orally at the younger grades and in written response for older students.
Here is an example:
What did the three little pigs use to build their houses?
The three little pigs used straw, wood and bricks to build their houses.
While this seems simplistic, it is a good way to get students to use key words and be sure to answer the question that is asked rather than providing unwanted information.
Give it a try when you are reading with your child at home and let me know what you think.
