It's hard to believe that summer break is almost here. Time for my annual book lists to share ideas of good summer reads. A bit bitter sweet as these will be my last lists for ISS, but it makes me happy to think of children spending time this summer enjoying a good book (or 2 or 10). Here are two reading lists I found at a great website Association for LIbrary Service to Children. Check out the whole site and enjoy some of the books they recommend: K-2 Summer REading from ALA.Org

You have heard about 6 Traits writing from your child, teachers and probably seen posters and signs around the school using 6 Trait language. We asked some Grade 3 students to reflect on the 6 Traits of Writing and gave them the task of presenting the traits to an imaginary audience who knows nothing about 6 Trait Writing. Here are some video clips - more to come after Wednesday's presentations. (We learned a lot - I learned to work on the lighting while trying to show the projected screen and the students learned to speak up, stand still and not go through the slides so fast!) Often we ask our students questions about what they are reading or researching and get a completely off topic or confused answer.
I just came across a new strategy (new to me) for help- ing students answer questions accurately. It is called "Steal and Slide" (thanks to teach123-school.blogspot.sg). The basic idea is that we teach children to steal words from the question and slide those keywords into the answer. This can be done orally at the younger grades and in written response for older students. Here is an example: What did the three little pigs use to build their houses? The three little pigs used straw, wood and bricks to build their houses. While this seems simplistic, it is a good way to get students to use key words and be sure to answer the question that is asked rather than providing unwanted information. Give it a try when you are reading with your child at home and let me know what you think. Our spring break is just a week away and I can already hear some parents saying "What are we going to do for 2 weeks?". Why not try out Tumble Books? We have a free trial that lasts until March 30 and it just might be a new and exciting way to entice your children to read more over the holiday.

Enjoy the story of Daniel the Horse, written by Grade 3. Check out The Adventures of Fluffy the Chick by Grade 1
While the target audience is ESL parents, there will be good tips and information for everyone. Please mark your calendars and try to attend.
Grade 4 came up with a slightly wacky story about the "creation" of ISS. See if you recognize any of the characters.
What a busy, fun filled week. We have had more authors, writing workshops, dress as your favorite book characters and more. There are still some cummulative stories being produced by each grade level that will be published as e-books and shared later on!
